Learning
Activities & Programs
Bald Head Island Academy™ incorporates typical classroom didactic lessons with teacher-supervised, age- and ability-guided, self-directed learning, with plenty of hands-on learning and collaborative and team play.
Open to all students, regardless of financial means, BHI Academy is staffed by best-in-class teachers educating children grades K through eight. BHI Academy provides its students with a rich, credentialed, on-island education. While the educational content complies with federal and North Carolina standards, the learning goes far beyond just these academic basics; it is designed to foster future leaders and will teach our children the fabric of our island–what makes BHI BHI–through lessons and some resources from BHI’s world-renowned Conservancy. We are breaking barriers and teaching children how to learn for life.
But our philosophy of lifelong learning for whole child development isn’t just limited to the traditional school year. We have a lively and engaging slate of summer activities for the entire family.
Outreach
Community Involvement
Bald Head Island Academy is designed to build thoughtful leaders and good stewards of our beautiful island home. Everything about our beautiful paradise lends itself to learning and preservation. The ocean, shoals, beachfront, dune ridge, salt marsh, fresh water lagoons, and Bald Head Woods (a dedicated nature preserve) provide a plethora of science and research education and conservation opportunities, as do the flora, meteorologic variety, topography, wildlife, sea life, and insects in these distinct island ecosystems. For decades, BHI has been a destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors and vacationers. It is also a residential community with children in need of exceptional learning opportunities. As such, a school that is intentionally designed around these values of discovery, protection, and preservation makes sense.

Traditional School Year
Bald Head Island Academy™ is designed to build thoughtful leaders and good stewards of our beautiful island home. With a motto of building respect for self, others, and the environment for generations to come, it is an island school providing children of all socioeconomic backgrounds with a best-in-class, state- and federally-compliant K through eighth grade education, emphasizing earth sciences and maritime ecosystems. We believe in our c-squared e-squared approach: child-centric eco-education.
